The Door Project
For Toddlers, project topics often emerge from their everyday experiences. This Toddler class noticed the many gates and doors in and around their school. Their curiosity prompted hands-on exploration which led to more questions, and the Door Project took off. The class studied the gates and doors leading in and out of their classroom and the latches and handles that allowed them to open and kept them closed. An investigative walk around the building revealed different types of doors and gates, some leading to other areas of the school and others leading to the outside. The children explored a variety of locks, latches, hinges and handles first-hand, as well as through books, photographs, songs and poems. The culmination of the Door Project included dramatic play with a child-sized door built just for them!
